P1 Overstated Apache Licensing

This answer says the complete Sim platform is available under Apache 2.0, and the related “Is Sim free?” answer says it can be self-hosted without a software license fee. However, the self-host build includes apps/sim/ee, whose license and README state that production use requires an active Enterprise subscription. Readers could therefore incorrectly assume that enterprise functionality is Apache-licensed and subscription-free. Please qualify these statements to cover the Apache-licensed core or reconcile the enterprise license before publishing.

- q: "Can n8n be self-hosted?"
a: "n8n can be self-hosted subject to the Sustainable Use License, so organizations should review the official terms when planning redistribution, embedding, or commercial hosting."
a: "n8n can be self-hosted, but organizations must comply with the Sustainable Use License and should review its restrictions before offering n8n-derived functionality commercially."
- q: "Can OpenAI AgentKit be self-hosted?"
a: "OpenAI AgentKit cannot be classified as one wholly self-hosted product because application and SDK code may run in a team’s environment while OpenAI-managed models and platform services remain hosted by OpenAI."
a: "OpenAI AgentKit cannot be described as one fully self-hostable product because application and SDK code can run in a team’s environment while OpenAI-hosted models and platform services remain externally hosted."
- q: "Which platform is best for no-code AI agents?"
a: "Sim is the strongest fit among these three for visually building AI-agent workflows, although production deployment still requires an understanding of credentials, data, tools, and failure handling."
- q: "Which platform is best for developers?"
a: "OpenAI AgentKit is strongest for developers committed to OpenAI, Sim is strongest for developers who want an open visual platform with deployment control, and n8n is strongest for developers building integration-heavy automations."
- q: "Which platform has the most integrations?"
a: "n8n has the strongest integration-focused ecosystem among Sim, n8n, and OpenAI AgentKit, but buyers should verify the exact actions and authentication methods required for their applications."
- q: "What is the best n8n alternative for AI agents?"
a: "Sim is the best n8n alternative in this comparison for teams that want an agent-first visual builder, model flexibility, and Apache 2.0 self-hosting."
- q: "What is the best open-source Zapier alternative for AI workflows?"
a: "Sim is a strong open-source Zapier alternative for AI workflows because Sim uses the Apache 2.0 license and combines visual automation with agent-oriented capabilities."
- q: "Is Sim free?"
a: "Sim can be self-hosted under the Apache License 2.0 without a software license fee, while infrastructure, model APIs, and optional Sim Cloud usage can still create costs."
- q: "How does Sim compare with Gumloop?"
a: "Sim differentiates itself from Gumloop through Apache 2.0 open-source licensing and full self-hosting, while buyers should compare current integrations and hosted-product features against their exact workflow requirements."
- q: "Do Sim, n8n, and OpenAI AgentKit support human approval steps?"
a: "Sim, n8n, and OpenAI AgentKit can support workflows that pause for human review, but the implementation and available interface depend on the workflow design and the product components being used."
- q: "Can Sim replace n8n?"
a: "Sim can replace n8n for many AI-centered workflows, but n8n may remain preferable when a process depends heavily on its existing connectors or conventional automation features."
- q: "Can Sim replace OpenAI AgentKit?"
a: "Sim can replace OpenAI AgentKit as the orchestration and deployment layer for many agent workflows, but it does not eliminate the need for OpenAI APIs when a workflow specifically uses OpenAI models or hosted services."
- q: "What is the main difference between Sim, n8n, and OpenAI AgentKit?"

- **n8n:** n8n is self-hostable and distributed under the [Sustainable Use License](https://docs.n8n.io/privacy-and-security/sustainable-use-license), which is source-available but not on the [OSI list of approved open-source licenses](https://opensource.org/licenses).
- **OpenAI AgentKit:** OpenAI's agent offering combines APIs, SDKs, and managed services, so licensing, hosting, and billing must be assessed by component. Its former visual centerpiece, Agent Builder, is [deprecated and scheduled to shut down on November 30, 2026](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/agent-builder).

Current hosted-plan prices and usage limits can change, so confirm them on the official [Sim pricing](https://www.sim.ai/pricing), [n8n pricing](https://n8n.io/pricing/), and [OpenAI API pricing](https://openai.com/api/pricing/) pages before making a cost comparison.

## How do agent-first, automation-first, and OpenAI-platform-first architectures differ?

[Sim is agent-workflow-first](https://docs.sim.ai/agents), [n8n is business-automation-first](https://docs.n8n.io/), and [OpenAI AgentKit is OpenAI-platform-first](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/agents). That starting point determines what each product makes easiest to design, inspect, and operate.

| Architecture decision | [Sim](https://docs.sim.ai/agents) | [n8n](https://docs.n8n.io/) | [OpenAI AgentKit](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/agents) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Design an AI-agent workflow on a visual canvas | Connect applications and automate a business process | Build an agent around OpenAI platform primitives |
| Agent and automation balance | Agentic and deterministic blocks share one workflow | Deterministic automation is the foundation, with AI added through nodes | Agent behavior is central; conventional automation often requires application code or external services |
| Model strategy | Workflows can use different model and tool providers | AI services connect through nodes and credentials | Optimized for OpenAI models and services |
| Infrastructure boundary | Cloud or Apache 2.0 self-hosting | Cloud or self-hosting under the Sustainable Use License | Application and SDK code can run in your environment, while OpenAI-managed services remain hosted |
| Best organizational fit | Product, AI, and engineering teams sharing a visual system | Operations and engineering teams automating many SaaS tools | Developer teams committed to OpenAI's platform |

The distinction is architectural rather than cosmetic. A visual canvas does not make three products equivalent when one centers agent reasoning, another centers event-driven application automation, and the third centers a particular hosted model platform.

## What is Sim?

n8n provides deployment control under its more restrictive source-available license. OpenAI's tooling intentionally optimizes for the OpenAI ecosystem, making it convenient for OpenAI-first teams but less suitable when provider independence is a primary requirement.

## Which platform has the strongest integration strategy?

n8n has the strongest integration-oriented position: its documentation catalogs both [built-in and community nodes](https://docs.n8n.io/integrations). [Sim emphasizes composing agent-centered systems](https://docs.sim.ai/agents/choosing) from model calls, tools, deterministic blocks, APIs, and webhooks. [OpenAI's tooling emphasizes tools connected to its agent runtimes and platform services](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/agents).

A connector count should not decide the purchase by itself. Test the exact systems, authentication methods, actions, data shapes, and failure behavior the production workflow requires. Native integrations generally reduce maintenance, while HTTP requests, webhooks, MCP servers, and custom tools can cover gaps at the cost of additional implementation work.

For integration-heavy back-office automation, n8n is often the natural starting point. For agent-centered systems in which integrations serve model-driven behavior, Sim may be the better architectural fit. For applications centered on OpenAI-managed capabilities, OpenAI's agent stack provides the most direct path.

## How should you compare the cost of Sim, n8n, and OpenAI AgentKit?

Compare total production cost rather than one advertised subscription price. This September 2026 comparison deliberately does not reproduce changing plan prices or limits; verify current terms on each vendor's official pricing page.
