Summary

Returning to a room in Blackwood Horror (e.g. UP to Basement Stairs) printed only its name: the books inherit Zork I's BRIEF default, and readers show the room name as a heading, so nothing appeared. Every book's GO now sets VERBOSE.

Playing Blackwood through found and fixed more:

  • Deaths did nothing. The books fell back to the bootstrap JIGS-UP stub, which printed and carried on. It now ends the story through FINISH. Wondertown's dawn timer had the same hole.
  • Silent commands. Ten scenery routines ended in a bare <RTRUE>, so climb staircase, push wallpaper and most verbs on them printed nothing.
  • Score rank garbage in Blackwood and Limehouse (LTABLE length slot indexed).
  • Geography. The entrance hall put the grand staircase east, where the patient ward is; up now answers. The lit basement corridor called itself pitch black and misplaced the dripping water; it now warns of the dark passage north.
  • Dropped objects printed fragments or their first placement; takeable LDESCs are now sentences that hold anywhere.
  • inject me with syringe now reaches its death; the unreachable shock-chair death is removed; capitalization and spacing fixes.

Enforcement

make lint-zil runs the new scripts/check-responses.lua: it plays 25 common verbs on every object in every book and fails on any empty reply or on a GO without VERBOSE (185 silent replies on the old code, 0 now). WRITING_ADVENTURES, the zil-implementation skill and AGENTS document the rules.

Tests

  • New books/blackwood-horror/test/test-playtest-navigation.zil
  • Limehouse and llm tests that expected brief revisits / first-visit room names match prose instead; a QUIT with no text returns nil again.
  • make test, make test-horror-all, make test-limehouse-walkthrough, make test-wondertown-descriptions, make lint-zil all pass.

Walking back UP to Blackwood's Basement Stairs printed only "Basement
Stairs": the books inherit Zork I's BRIEF default, and a reader that
shows room names as headings showed nothing. Every book's GO now sets
VERBOSE.

Playing Blackwood through found more:
- JIGS-UP was the bootstrap stub that printed and carried on, so the
grue, the cold and the serum killed no one. It now ends the story
through FINISH (Wondertown's dawn timer had the same hole).
- Ten scenery routines ended in a bare <RTRUE>, so CLIMB STAIRCASE,
PUSH WALLPAPER and most verbs on them printed nothing.
- SCORE printed garbage after "Rank:" (Blackwood and Limehouse indexed
  the LTABLE's length slot).
- The entrance hall put the grand staircase in the east, where the
patient ward is; UP now answers with the collapsed landing. The lit
basement corridor called itself pitch black and put the dripping
water east; it now warns that the north passage is dark.
- Dropped objects printed fragments or their first placement ("A
logbook rests on a desk."). Takeable LDESCs are sentences that hold
  anywhere; placements moved to FDESC.
- INJECT ME never matched WINNER; the shock-chair death was unreachable
and is removed. PEWS/CANDLES capitals and a stray space are fixed.

make lint-zil now plays common verbs on every object (check-responses)
and fails on silence or a GO without VERBOSE. WRITING_ADVENTURES, the
zil-implementation skill and AGENTS document the rules. The Limehouse
and llm tests that expected brief revisits or a first-visit room name
match prose instead, and a QUIT with no text returns nil again.
