The splash was drawn inside the game window. In windowed mode that meant it had a window frame, and it left leftover pixels on screen while the game set up its window. The splash now has its own frameless window, and the game window stays hidden until it's ready.
In windowed mode the game window appears once the first frame is drawn, and the splash closes right after. In fullscreen the switch happens just before the display mode changes, because fullscreen needs the game window in front at that point. If the splash image can't be loaded, startup works like before.
