Players with an old Visual C++ Redistributable either crashed or couldn't start the game at all. The game now checks the runtime version before anything else runs, and requires the version the build was compiled with or newer.

If it's too old, the game offers to install the latest one. It downloads the official installer from Microsoft, checks that it's signed by Microsoft, runs it, and restarts the game. The newer runtime DLLs are now loaded lazily, so even very old installs reach this check instead of Windows refusing to start the game.

The check is skipped on Wine/Proton, and -skipRuntimeCheck turns it off. The only case it can't catch is a PC with no redistributable at all, where Windows shows its own error.
